Do You Have an Eating Disorder?

In today's thin-obsessed society, it's hard to feel confident about your body. You may overindulge in junk foods, or you may often feel ashamed of your weight. Everyone has insecurities, but these insecurities can lead some people to develop a negative relationship with food. Are your eating habits normal, or are you on the road to an eating disorder?

1. How do you usually feel when you eat?
Out of control. I can't stop putting food in my mouth!
Guilty. What I'm eating will make me fat.
Happy. I know I'm fueling my body with the energy it needs.
Hungry. Even though there's a lot of food on my plate, I won't let myself finish it.

2. How often do you think about food?
Whenever I get hungry, which is usually a few hours after my last meal.
All the time. My stomach's growling!
Constantly. I'm always on the lookout for opportunities to sneak away and eat.
Pretty much all day, but I try to control my eating habits nonetheless.

3. Do you enjoy eating with your coworkers, friends or family?
No. It's hard to pretend that I'm eating when I'm not.
No. I'm too embarrassed to eat as much as I want when other people are looking on.
Absolutely. It's fun to share jokes and stories while enjoying a good meal.
It's alright. I feel self-conscious about how I eat, but I manage to make it through most meals anyway.

4. You leave your house around 10 a.m. to run some errands. If you know you'll get back home around 2 p.m., what food do you bring?
Fat-free crackers and granola bars, which I eat for lunch.
I don't bring any food with me. Running errands gives me the perfect excuse to stop by my favorite fast food restaurant, and I'll eat some donuts from the bakery as well.
Nothing. I ate lunch yesterday, so I won't eat it today.
I eat a healthy breakfast before I go and plan on eating lunch when I get back. But just in case I get hungry, I throw a protein bar in my purse.

5. How do you feel when you see a thin woman working out at the gym?
I'm happy that I'm skinnier than she is.
Jealous. I wish I could have her body!
Disgusted with myself. Maybe if I wasn't such a pig, then I would look like her too.
I admire her physique. She looks healthy and fit.

6. What best describes the amount of calories you consume?
If no one's around, I sometimes consume thousands of calories at one time, usually in the form of ice cream bars and chips. But it's no big deal because I can just throw it back up and it won't count.
I usually eat around 1,000 calories a day.
It depends on how hungry I am, but I usually eat three square meals and one or two small snacks.
It fluctuates. Sometimes I'll eat a balanced meal, but I often skip meals if I'm feeling fat and eat a lot more if I feel I deserve a treat.

7. Do you ever eat by yourself after returning from a social dinner?
No, I'm comfortably full when I come home.
Yes. I eat all the foods I was too embarrassed to eat in public: cheesecake, cookies and pasta.
I pick at some leftovers in the fridge but don't really feel satisfied.
Nope, the green salad I ate will hold me over.

8. How do your pants fit?
They fit OK, but I'll never look as good in my jeans as Molly Sims does in hers.
Perfectly. I love how they flatter my butt.
I can barely squeeze into them, and buttoning them is so uncomfortable.
They're so loose that they won't stay up.

9. What are your energy levels like?
I never seem to have enough energy and get tired quickly.
My energy levels fall when I get depressed about the way I look.
I feel pretty good.
I frequently experience energy highs followed by fatigue.

10. How often do you eat treats or junk food like cake or chips?
I'll have a special treat once or twice a week.
I try to eat healthfully in social settings, but I cave in on the weekends when I'm by myself.
I indulge myself in a junk food fest a few times a week and then make up for it by taking a laxative so I don't have to feel guilty about it.
Rarely. If I do eat a fattening food, I don't eat for the rest of the day.

These were my results:

You may be suffering from anorexia nervosa
Even if you haven't yet developed full-blown anorexia, you have an unhealthy relationship with food. You skip meals even when you're hungry, and the thought of food is never far from your mind. You pursue thinness relentlessly, turning away food and starving yourself in order to achieve an ideal physique. Most likely, nutrient deprivation leaves you feeling weak and tired, robbing your body of the energy you need to make it through your day. Anorexia is a disease that affects your mind and causes physical symptoms. Because you're obsessed with being thin, you may experience feelings of anxiety and depression. Oftentimes, anorexia develops as a reaction to a traumatic life event. Anything from teasing to sexual abuse to a bad breakup may trigger this disorder. You may feel that the rest of your life is out of control and that the only way to control it is to strictly regulate the amount of food you eat, but in the end anorexia will end up controlling you. Read these symptoms to find out if you or a friend may be developing anorexia:

Symptoms of AnorexiaPatients are diagnosed with anorexia when their body weight is 85% less than what is expected for their age and height. But even if you don't technically have anorexia, that doesn't mean there isn't a problem. Here are some warning signs and symptoms that might suggest that you suffer from anorexia:

* You feel fat, even though you are actually thin
* You are terrified of growing overweight
* You relentlessly pursue a waif-like body
* You skip meals or only eat tiny portions
* You always have an excuse for not eating (I'm too tired, I just ate, I'm not hungry)
* You divide food into "good" and "bad" categories and only consume "safe" foods

If any of the above conditions describe something that you're going through, seek professional help immediately. Your friends and family may be able to provide emotional support, but chances are they're not qualified to help you overcome your problem. Ask your primary care physician about a referral to a psychological counselor who can help you work through your problems.

i've done a few of those tests and all of them tell me i'm more messed up than i even think i am. silly me, my self-esteem is so low i feel like i don't DESERVE to be like this, i'm not good enough to even have an ed. i've tried to tell people really close to me that i'm not very well, but they either didn't believe and just laughed at me or told me that i'm f*cking stupid.

it's great that these forums exist, otherwise me and i bet all of us were damn alone.

It's so surreal knowing you have a problem, but then answering a questionnaire and reading all the YES's you fill to how messed up you are.... It opens your own eyes....scary O.o

1. How do you usually feel when you eat?
Either guilty, anxious, or out of control.

2. How often do you think about food?
All day.

3. Do you enjoy eating with your coworkers, friends or family?
I definitely prefer eating alone. But eating in front of my family is essential to keeping suspicions low. Unless, of course, I'm binging... since I was caught vomiting twice.

4. You leave your house around 10 a.m. to run some errands. If you know you'll get back home around 2 p.m., what food do you bring?
Either a pack of gum and some sugar free jello if I'm doing well, but typically a couple bags of chocolate (caramel filled or white chocolate, yum!) or chips.

5. How do you feel when you see a thin woman working out at the gym?
Jealous, fat, and motivated to work harder.

6. What best describes the amount of calories you consume?
It varies from day to day. Too much to fit in around here.

7. Do you ever eat by yourself after returning from a social dinner?
No.

8. How do your pants fit?
A little big, but I HATE jeans! It's a comfort thing for me. So if they're a little big, I might actually wear them.

9. What are your energy levels like?
Low. I'm ALWAYS tired. And I'm 16 and I can't get out of bed in the morning without popping a caffeine pill. Then again, I have to wake up at 5:30 for school.

10. How often do you eat treats or junk food like cake or chips?
Almost every day. I also throw up almost every day.
